John in New York

So we have been talking a lot lately about a possible trip to New York, John has been 3 times before and even though I have been to the States I never visited New York which of course is high on my list and John would go back anytime he could but this time would like to do some foodie exploring further afield in places like New Jersey and Philadelphia as well as the big apple of course

Adventurous fans of good food are almost always on the lookout for a new restaurant or café to try, be it a newly-opened bistro or an oft-recommended village pastry shop loved by all. If you have a sweet tooth and are looking around Margate NJ real estate choices for your new home, you’ll be glad
to know that you have these unique pastry and dessert shops around.

This small bakery is an institution in Hackensack and is famous for its heavy crumb cake. The cake has the perfect cake-to-crumb topping ratio and is baked fresh throughout the day to meet New Jerseyans’ insatiable demands. They also bake chocolate tarts, chocolate chip and corn muffins, cheesecake, and cookies, among other treats.

Bent Spoon, Princeton

Locally-sourced, organic ingredients are the secret to Bent Spoon’s artisanal ice cream and sorbet, of which there are 425 flavors. They get their herbs from the cooperative program at the Princeton School Gardens, their strawberries from the Muths’ family farm, and their pears from nearby Terhune Orchards.

Holsten’s Brookdale Confectionery, Bloomfield

Known as New Jersey’s best old-fashioned ice cream parlor, the family-owned Holsten’s is a well-loved sweet shop that has been in business since 1939. The menu contains 15 flavors of homemade ice cream, but you can catch seasonal treats such as the pumpkin ice cream during the fall season. It also has sandwiches and lots of chocolate goodies. Fun fact: If you think you’ve see Holsten’s Brookdale Confectionery somewhere on television before, you’re right—it was used as a location for the last episode of The Sopranos.

Confections of a Rock$tar, Asbury Park

This bakery has a music theme, and rightly so: it really is a confectionery shop owned by a rock drummer! They have unique cupcakes in a variety of flavors, including a banana cupcake with peanut butter frosting topped with—guess what—honey-dipped bacon. It’s called “Don’t be Cruel”, so don’t be cruel to yourself and head on over there when you’re in NJ. They also have cupcakes named “Oreo Speedwagon” (it’s vegan chocolate!) and “Strawberry Fields” (no surprise, it’s strawberry). You can also take your pets with you and get them “The Hound Dog” cupcake as a treat.

Cupcakes by Carousel, Ridgewood

They have the prettiest cupcakes in all of New Jersey. In this shop, cupcakes turn into works of art with the freshest ingredients, sprinkles, and frosting. It’s not all décor, however—their cupcakes taste as heavenly as they look! They also have specialty cupcakes that let you donate to charity when you buy them, so you can have your cake and help someone too.
