5 ways a person can improve their feeling of wellness

wellbeing

It is not unusual for people to feel exhausted at the end of their working week, especially at this time of the year. While there might not be as many manual jobs as there once were, the mental strain that is put on the body has never been greater. Much of this can be put down to continual advances in digital technology, which while sometimes making things more accessible and quicker, also has its drawbacks.

It also means that we are working longer & more unsociable hours than before and we don't always get that much-needed downtime on weekends and evenings. Being constantly available online can lead to burnout and street and there are going to be times when we all need to assess our work-life balance and make time to prioritise wellbeing. There are a variety of things we need to keep in check, such as our sleep, diet and overall posture and physical health so booking an appointment with a health professional may be needed, such as Physio in Camberwell online.

1. A visit to a physiotherapist can provide welcome relief to those who might be wondering why they are suffering aches and pains. Some might think that they are imagining it and the issues will soon go away, but a professional physio with experience will identify any issues and deal with them, maybe through massage, to provide peace of mind and offer ways to ensure previous niggles and strains aren’t picked up in the future. I've had quite a few physio sessions over the years for various reasons and they have always been beneficial.

2. Taking regular exercise is good for the heart and other organs which can lift moods at the same time. While gym memberships are available, they are not the choice of everyone. It can be something as simple as parking a little further away from work or getting off a stop early on public transport and then having a little walk each time that does the trick.

3. It is so easy with a nonstop lifestyle to eat on the go and not consider what is being chosen. Having so many options available is fantastic but many include high densities of sugar or salt which need to be avoided. A little bit of anything in moderation is fine, but choosing fresh fruit and vegetables can improve moods as well as the overall health of an individual. Maybe recreating a taste of Italy might be enjoyed.

green juice

4. It is important to have fun to lift the spirits. Whether it be mixing socially with friends and meeting for a coffee or maybe going to an event together. Maybe some travel can be enjoyed which can also see making some online purchases which are protected by consumer rights and guarantees can be made while in a nice place.

5. Finding ways to relax is vitally important. Some may decide that meditation works for them, while others could enjoy a long soak in the bath. It is wise to turn off phones well before bedtime to be able to enjoy a good night’s sleep which is essential for increasing wellness.

In today’s fast-paced world, it is important to pamper oneself occasionally, so that increased wellness can be enjoyed by being able to operate at full capacity.

Checklist For a First Campervan Holiday with Kids

19/11/2024

campervan

A campervan can provide a tremendously rewarding way to spend a holiday as a family, it's something I've done a few times with my kids and not only is it a fun adventure but also a great way to bond and have some quality family time. If this is going to be your first campervan holiday, however, then you’ll want to take a few preparatory steps before you embark as it's not like a normal holiday and can take a few adjustments to get comfortable.

By getting the planning stages right, you’ll minimise the likelihood of something going wrong, and give yourself the best chance of a memorable, enjoyable experience.

Selecting the Right Campervan

With so many options out there today it can feel a little overwhelming but there are plenty of companies that offer campervan hire, which is an affordable way to try it out before investing in a camper yourself & also lets you see what works and what doesn't for your family. If the vehicle you choose isn’t appropriate for your family’s needs, then you might struggle to have a good time. You’ll want enough beds to accommodate everyone, as well as seat belts for all of the passengers you’re taking.

Storage space is also essential. If you don’t have enough, then you’ll be forced to store luggage in walkways and other inconvenient spaces. Over the duration of the holiday, this can be a source of considerable stress.

To drive on public roads in the UK, you’ll need to have your vehicle insured. In the case of campervans, it’s worth looking into special campervan insurance policies. These will cover not just the cost of the vehicle, but also of the vehicle’s contents, if you're hiring a camper this should be included in the cost of hire.

Planning Your Route and Campsites

By planning your route well in advance, you’ll be able to work out whether there are any family-friendly sites along the way. Research your options thoroughly. A site that’s been designed for retirees or young people might not be appropriate for families.

In the more picturesque corners of the country, you’ll tend to find a higher concentration of campsites. The best way to see Snowdonia, the Lake District, or the Scottish Highlands is often to find a site that’s right out in the wilderness. That way, you’ll be able to experience the untamed beauty of nature, without having to contend with crowds of tourists.

Packing Essentials for the Journey

Even if you’re staying in a larger campervan, you’ll still need to ensure that you’ve packed appropriately for the trip. This will tend to mean using packing cubes, which will help you to sort out all of your items so that you aren’t confronted by a mess when you open a suitcase.

The weather in the UK is notoriously difficult to predict, so you might want to include a range of different layerable clothes. Don’t forget Wellington boots, and waterproof jackets and coats, even if you’re travelling during summer.

To keep the kids occupied, it’s worth also bringing along a selection of books and board games. This will help you to minimise your screen time.

Managing boredom and Tiredness on the Road

Travel can be a stressful thing for adults. But small children they can at times easily get bored and then in turn agitated or frustrated. Dealing with this problem is often a matter of managing your schedule so that disruption is minimised, and so that you stop off somewhere child-friendly every so often. When there’s an adventure playground just around the corner, your kids might find it easier to stay positive.

How to Keep a Family Bathroom Looking Stylish

15/11/2024

stylish bathroom

A great bathroom should be functional. This is a room that serves an important practical purpose, and it’s important it does it well. Good appliances, plumbing and ventilation are therefore essential – especially in busy family households. But style matters too. What’s more, a family bathroom can look the part without compromising on functionality. Let’s consider how this might be done.

Incorporate Child-Friendly Features Without Sacrificing Style

If you have small children in the house, then you might consider cabinetry and appliances that can withstand knocks and scratches, and which can accommodate the needs and tastes of young people. You might go for bold, cartoon-branded shower curtains, or eco-friendly Marmoleum flooring. Cabinets should be lockable, especially if you’re going to be storing harsh cleaning chemicals in them.

Choose Durable and Stylish Materials

The materials you choose matter, arguably just as much as the appliances. To minimise the likelihood of a slip, you might opt for textured tiles, or natural stone ones. Try to test out the tiles before you install them, so you can be sure that you’re getting the right amount of grip. Fixtures should be as sturdy as possible, and installed by qualified professionals.

Fortunately, you can find tiles in a range of styles and configurations. You might go for hexagonal tiles, or you might arrange conventional tiles in an interesting way. Herringbone patterns are a classic way to add a touch of style to any bathroom – but you’ll need a skilled tiler to get the best from them.

sink and basin

Enhance Lighting for Ambience and Functionality

The lighting you choose is crucial, too. You’ll want to bring in lighting in several layers. Overhead lighting can help to fill the space, while accent lighting can create a visual focal point in the room. Perhaps most important is task lighting, which can be easily directed to whatever it is that you’re doing in the bathroom. Illuminated mirrors tend to work wonderfully, especially if you often find yourself using the bathroom mirror to do cosmetic, close-up work.
Prioritise Practical Storage Solutions

Storage matters in the bathroom. If you end up with too much clutter filling the room, then you’ll struggle to relax. You can take advantage of naturally occurring space beneath bathrooms and sinks, and use the top of the cistern for storage, too. Special lidded bins for particular items will help you to deal with waste as soon as it’s created.

Cardiff bay Wetlands, a hidden gem in the Welsh Capital

Cardiff Bay Wetlands

One of our favourite places to visit during the summer, but also the colder months, is Cardiff Bay Wetlands, a short walk from the vibrant bay area of the Welsh capital.

It's easy to miss and many people who live in the city don't even know it's there but it's well worth seeking out as it's a lovely quiet and tranquil place to explore and soak in beautiful views across the bay and people off all ages can enjoy it.

The wetlands are completely free to explore and cover 8 hectares of former salt marsh and are now a biodiversity hotspot within the capital and is now home to a variety of birds, fish, animals and supports a rich diversity of plants and other wildlife. We regularly spot swans, moorhens, coots and ducks on our visits along with fish and damselflies.

Cardiff Bay

The great thing is birds and wildlife can be seen here all year round including common Reed Buntings, Reed Warblers and Sedge Warblers which use the habitat to build their nests during the spring and summer while autumn and winter sees visitors like Teal and European Stonechat.

The easiest way to access the reserve is through the carpark next to St Davids Hotel, which brings you out on to a wide gravel walkway which is suitable for buggies and wheelchairs. There is also an impressive boardwalk which extends out over the water, offering amazing views across the Barrage and the perfect spot for some bird watching.

Kids can also enjoy doing the Wetlands Wildlife Explorer trail, you can download the map here and just remember to bring some crayons with you to create some lovely rubbings.

The Bay can be a very busy place but you feel like a world away at the Wetlands and it's a great spot to spend a relaxed hour taking a stroll or letting the kids run out some of their energy while enjoying the natural surroundings and I recommend a visit if you are in the area.

Easy ways to teach children about money

pocket money

We all know how important financial literacy is for children and teens as they move forward through their life, we need to prepare them for an increasingly expensive world were budgeting skills are needed more than ever.

It's one life skill we cannot ignore and starting from a young age is important and there are plenty of ways to encourage a healthy approach to money that is both engaging and fun for children.

As parents, it's our role to instil a healthy attitude towards money, both for ourselves and our children. I would always recommend putting things in place like Life insurance and a Will (I've sorted out both) should anything happen to us, but also saving accounts for our children if possible. I have Premium bonds set up for the boys, even though there is only a small amount in each, it's something. You can also consider investing or looking into UGMA accounts on behalf of your child.

As a parent who has recently set my teen up with his own debit card, as well as having a younger child who has his savings jar at home, I wanted to share what has worked so far.

1. Talk to your children regularly about money

We need to have regular, honest conversations with our children about the cost and value of daily items. Discussing our own financial decisions, how we budget for the week and what our plans are in terms of days out and how that fits into our budget. You can also touch on how money is earned and different ways you pay for things - online, by card, subscriptions etc

2. Involve them in the weekly shop

Once your children are old enough to navigate the supermarket (with your supervision of course) and can read, then write out a small list of groceries you need and ask your children to choose the best-value combinations of the products on the list and get them to add up as you go along, is great real-life experience that will help grow their understanding of the value of essentials such as food and groceries.

paying for goods

3. Talk about the difference between want and need

This is a useful conversation to have at any age, even with adults, a reminder between the things we want and those things we really need (such as food, bills etc). Children need to understand that as they grow older, we need to cover our essential outgoings before spending money on things we want but don't absolutely need.

4. Pocket Money as a tool

Pocket money can be a really useful teaching tool, it doesn't need to be loads of money, my boys get £5 each per week and I encourage them to save this money as they can use it for things they really want in between life events such as Birthdays and Christmas. It also helps to teach the lessons of "you can't spend if you don't earn", so if there is something they really want they need to save their money and if it's spent before they reach their goal that is their choice but I won't fill in the gap. You can print out budgeting worksheets for children here.

5. The importance of security

Looking after both our physical and virtual money is very important and children need to understand if they lose money or it's stolen then it is unlikely to be replaced (we have all been in that situation and it's a hard life lessons to learn but an important one). Explaining that PIN numbers are personal information that needs to be kept safe and secure, the same with money in the home, it should be kept in a safe place.

Christmas party

Christmas is just around the corner, which means that it is about to get busy in terms of gatherings, parties and social plans. While seeing family and friends can be a fantastic mood booster, it's easy to feel fatigued and tired, which can show in your skin. It's really important to still stay hydrated and if possible get enough sleep and look after yourself during this busy time and that includes your skincare.  This post will offer five tips that will help you feel amazing for all your social events and get in the festive spirit.

1. Stay hydrated and stay consistent

Winter can be a tough season when it comes to skincare, particularly when it comes to dryness. This is why you need to make sure you are staying hydrated, drinking enough water and also being consistent with your skincare routine to maintain a healthy glow, including exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and hydrating serums to combat dryness. Be sure to use high-quality products that are designed for your skin type.

2. Have fun with festive makeup trends

It can be fun to embrace the latest festive makeup trends to celebrate the Christmas spirit, feel the part and look your fantastic at parties. This can include the classic look of bold red lips and shimmering eyeshadow or the current trend of floating crystal liner. There are plenty of great examples of festive makeup trends online, allowing you to find one that you want to try.

3. Prepare your skin for the spotlight

Feeling happy and confident in our own skin really shows, when we are truly comfortable we tend to find socialising easier so developing body care routines that help give you smooth and glowing skin, such as regular exfoliation and moisturising can be a real boost to your self-confidence. If you do shave, you can also use hair removal products to achieve a polished appearance.

4. Practice your party hairstyle

I don't know about you but when I have a fresh haircut and it's styled well, it really boosts my self-confidence. Christmas can be a great excuse to try something more daring to your regular look, such as an elegant updo, buzzcut or loose waves. Accessories can also create an eye-catching and festive look, including hats, headbands, and clips that complement your outfit. Again, there is a lot of helpful inspiration online that should help you find a suitable style and practising your look before going out can save you time but also allow you to experiment with it and see what does and doesn't work.

5. Get enough sleep

This can sometimes be hard when you have a busy social calendar but it's till really important to try and get enough sleep as this has a huge impact on our skin and overall wellbeing.

Finally, you need to keep your makeup and hair fresh during events. This can involve using setting sprays for longer-lasting makeup and carrying essential touch-up products that can be applied throughout the night in a small beauty kit. This will be particularly important if you plan on spending a lot of time on the dance floor!

These five tips should help you look your best for this party season. Christmas can be a lot of fun with many parties and social events to attend, so you will always want to make sure that you look your best and put in extra effort for the holidays. By focusing on the above five areas, you should feel prepared for party season and impress at every event you attend.

travel style

One of the most important accessories in any wardrobe are bags, not only because they are practical and serve a purpose but because of the style & sophistication each one can bring. French luxury handbags are more than just an accessory to make your outfit complete, they are historical pieces, showcasing the best of French design and craftsmanship.

Are you fascinated by the history of handbags and how that ties in with French culture and their passion for style and fashion? Below is an exploration of the most iconic pieces of French fashion and how they can change your life for the better.

Investing in a heirloom piece

Luxury bags are known for their bold and elegant touch that places a major emphasis on fashion and lifestyle, as a form of cultural identity and self-expression. From the effortless street style to high-end pieces, Longchamp demonstrates essential elements that define French Fashion. Known for its innovation in terms of state-of-the-art techniques and outstanding designs, the reputation of this brand extends for over 70 years and has only grown since.

Why Luxury Bags?

French luxury items tend to make their presence felt and known, without much effort. Luxury bags are a perfect example of French fashion that offers a balance between function and form. The main focus of most designer bags is on functionality rather than aesthetic value. Brands like Longchamp work toward redefining contemporary fashion, offering items that are not only functional but also pragmatic in nature.
All in One

Designer bags are suitable for both rural excursions and urban lifestyles, representing more than one entity (fashion statement). These bags offer quality material, comfort, personalisation and ergonomics. Designer brands spend most of their time researching and selecting only the top-quality leather material. This, combined with the technical know-how they have, results in a simple yet elegant piece that can last for years if taken care of and conditioned well.

Final thought

Most people are not happy, even with lots of stuff at their disposal. This is why most end up looking for luxury items like bags. Designer bags are not just accessories but a statement of fashion, timelessness, comfort and status. This means buying something that lasts long, has a story behind it and is environmentally friendly and nothing fits the description more than Longchamp luxury bags.

But if you scratch the surface, you'll find some of LA's best-kept secrets waiting to be explored. Whether you're a local or visiting, these unique spots will show you a different side of the city. Let's dive in!

1. The Old LA Zoo at Griffith Park

Did you know LA has an abandoned zoo hidden in Griffith Park? The Old LA Zoo, which closed in the 1960s, still has its old animal enclosures, cages, and structures scattered around. Walking through the graffiti-covered ruins feels like you're exploring an old movie set, but it's a relic of LA's past. It's a great place for an adventurous day out.

Travel Tip: Bring supplies for a picnic, find a quiet spot nearby, and enjoy the park's peaceful vibe. It's also a fantastic spot for photos and urban exploration.

2. Sunken City, San Pedro

Sunken City in San Pedro is a real hidden treasure. It was once a neighbourhood that slid into the ocean after a landslide in the 1920s. The broken streets tilted foundations, and vibrant graffiti give it an almost surreal, artistic vibe. Technically, it's off-limits, but people still come to check it out and enjoy the views of the Pacific.

Travel Tip: While hopping the fence and exploring is tempting, be cautious as the area is unstable. If you prefer to stay safe, nearby Point Fermin Park offers similar stunning ocean views without the risks.

The Last Bookstore is more than just a place to buy books—it's a quirky, artistic wonderland. You'll find a labyrinth of books, book tunnels, and cozy reading corners. Plus, there's an art gallery upstairs filled with oddities and unique pieces. It's an excellent spot for bookworms and anyone who loves a creative, offbeat atmosphere.

Travel Tip: Spend some time wandering through the entire space. There are hidden gems around every corner, and the whimsical vibe makes it perfect for some Instagram-worthy shots.

Escape Hotel Hollywood: Offers theatrical, horror-inspired rooms such as "Zombie" and "Witchcraft," delivering an atmospheric and spooky experience.

Travel Tip: Escape rooms get booked quickly, especially on weekends, so make sure to reserve in advance. Also, team up with friends or family—working together makes the experience even more enjoyable.

5. Greystone Mansion & Park

Located in Beverly Hills, Greystone Mansion is a historic estate with lush gardens and stunning views of the city. Even better, it's free to explore! Stroll through the grounds, admire the architecture, or relax in this quiet spot away from LA's hustle and bustle. Fun fact: Greystone Mansion has been the backdrop for many movies and TV shows so that you might recognize it!

Travel Tip: Check if there are any special events or performances happening when you visit. The estate often hosts fun cultural events that add an extra layer to your visit.

6. Heritage Square Museum

Step back in time at the Heritage Square Museum, a collection of beautifully restored Victorian homes from the 19th century. Each house tells a different story, giving you a glimpse into LA's past. It's like walking through a mini-history lesson but way more interesting than you'd expect.

Travel Tip: The guided tours are full of interesting tidbits, and the volunteers are great storytellers. If you're into history, try to visit during one of their themed events, like the "Mourning Tour," where they explore Victorian funeral customs.

For something truly unique, check out the Museum of Jurassic Technology. It's hard to describe exactly what it is—part museum, part art installation, part curiosity cabinet. The exhibits blend fact and fiction, giving you a strange, fascinating experience that leaves you wondering what's real and what's not.

Personal Insight: The museum feels like stepping into another dimension. It's thought-provoking, weird, and wonderful. Unlike any other museum you'll visit in LA, I could easily spend hours there.

Travel Tip: Take your time with it. Some of the exhibits are so bizarre that you need time to fully soak them in. Bring a friend for lively discussions about what you've just seen!

Looking for a peaceful escape from the city? Eaton Canyon offers an easy, scenic hike that ends at a beautiful waterfall. Located in the San Gabriel Mountains, it's not too far from downtown LA but feels like a world away. The trail is surrounded by nature, and the waterfall at the end makes it well worth the trek.

Travel Tip: Arrive early to avoid the crowds, especially on weekends. Don't forget your water and sturdy shoes—while the hike is fairly easy, parts of the trail can get rocky.

How to create functional zones in open-plan homes

open plan living

While the flow and spaciousness of open-plan living offer many benefits, it’s not always the most practical layout. Assigning spaces for certain purposes becomes more challenging when walls are removed. But there are still ways to create functional zones without them. Follow our tips to bring more purpose to your open-plan home.

Strategic furniture placement

You don’t always need walls to separate living spaces, you can do it with furniture. Sofas, tables, shelving units and other additions can be incredibly effective dividers, helping to define spaces without closing your open-plan home.

In a spacious kitchen, dining and living room area, corner sofas offer cosy seating and a natural divide between these spaces – all without making a space feel cramped. Open shelving units and bookcases can provide functional borders while maintaining visibility from one side of a space to the other. Be careful to not impede the flow between zones, though.

Using colour to distinguish areas

If minimalism is more your style, particularly when it comes to furniture, colour can be used to separate your space. This can be applied with soft furnishings, wall paints and décor.

Subtle transitions between shades of the same colour can keep continuity in a room while highlighting different areas or features. Contrasting colours are great for creating definition, atmosphere and more noticeable zones. For example, a darker seating area can enhance intimacy. Lighter colours in work areas can inspire focus and creativity.

Flooring transitions for visual boundaries

Flooring is one of the simplest ways to outline spaces in an open-plan home. Transitions signal a change in function, adding visual interest and a gentle sense of structure.

Wood flooring in living areas can bring charm and character while tiling in the kitchen provides a durable and easy-to-clean surface. Using rugs can work wonders for defining areas without the need to change the actual flooring. In a large, continuous space, an area rug under the dining table or sofa can help establish that specific zone, adding both texture and comfort.

Don’t be afraid to play with floor levels, too. A slightly elevated platform for the lounge or study nook makes that area feel distinct and special, without the need for walls.

Lighting techniques to define zones

How you light a space can dramatically transform its look and feel. For example, pendant lights work well over a dining area, drawing attention to the table as a focal point while creating an intimate, cosy feel.

In the kitchen, brighter, functional lighting, such as recessed ceiling lights or under-cabinet lights, keeps the space well-illuminated for cooking. Softer floor lamps and table lamps in the lounge create a relaxing ambience, perfect for unwinding.

How will you zone your open-plan living space?
