Protecting your belongings when moving house

As some of you may already know we are planning to move home (again) as we bought our current property as a bit of a project and we are coming to the end of doing it up, it's not finished but we are getting there and are aiming to put it on the market in summer. This will be the 3rd move for Mr A, although we are planning on getting a slightly longer term project next time (still a project though)the thought of packing everything up comes straight to my mind. It's a strange thing packing everything you own and through it you realise what is really important to you. With every move we get rid of things we don't really need as well as take great care in protecting those things we do love.

When you make an important or expensive purchase, regardless of what it is, you do your best to take good care of it when it's in use. You don't type on your new laptop with cheese-puff dust all over your fingers, and you don't take your new sports car down the most pot hole-riddled street in town. But what if I were to tell you the way you treat some things when you aren't using them can be just as important to their preservation as they way you treat them while you are using them?

For fragile items you personally handle, protective cases are possibly the most important thing for maintaining an item's safety, especially if your moving or they are going to be handled heavily. Outfitted with the right case cushioning, instruments like guitars can survive tipping over if the cat bumps into them, and a strong, secure computer case can help ensure your laptop won't shake itself apart on your way to class. While we all try to do our due diligence taking care of our favorite belongings, casing and padding are the key to making sure accidents don’t befall them when you aren't there to look out for them and considering getting precision-cut foam packing may be a good option

If you are planning to move anytime soon than I highly recommend the following when it comes to packing your homely processions and want them to get to the other side on one piece

1. Use bubble wrap - this is perfect for small delicate items

2. Pack larger items in cardboard boxes and label what is inside - this is a huge help once you do move so you don't have to open every box to find what you are looking for.

3. Take out insurance on expensive items such as a laptop or TV as these can break easily in a move

4. If your especially worried about a particular procession consider looking at something like The Foam Factory which makes custom fitting foam casings for individual items.

5. Don't stress - if you do you are likely to make more mistakes and perhaps drop something that means a lot to you. I always try and approach a house move as relaxed as possible.
