Travel Flashback - Isle of Eigg

Scottish highlands
A beautiful beach on the Isle of Eigg

Around 5 years ago I worked over the summer in a remote West Coast Scottish Village, at a very cute little Tea shop, the village had less than 400 occupants and the nearest big town was Fort William around an hour and a half away. I have always been one of those people who loves wide open spaces, who loves to be small in the wide world, to breath in fresh air and to walk for miles without seeing anyone. This post however is not about the village I lived in (this will be in another post) but about a day trip I took on one of my days off to the beautiful Isle of Eigg.

Adventure on the ferry towards the Isle of Eigg

It's our recent spell of sun which reminded me so much of this little trip, which was a stunning sunny Scottish day with crystal clear water and white sandy beaches. I enjoyed the peacefulness of the Isle so much and loved doing this day trip solo. I think that Scotland is a very underrated travel destination and having done a lot of travel around the Highlands, Isles and having lived in Edinburgh for more than a year I can honestly say you will see some of the most inspiring landscapes in Scotland, and surprisingly some pretty good weather during the summer months.

Isle of Eigg

The Isle of Eigg is very small, I found the best way to get around was walk but you can also hire bicycles. It has a small post office, craft shop and cafe as well as a camp site which has an amazing view across the bay.

To get to the Isle of Eigg I took a ferry from Mallaig and you past the Isle of Skye on your way as well as the Isle of Rum. There is something really magical about this part of Scotland, so beautiful and peaceful and a great place for the soul.

As I was living and travelling on my own I couldn't help but do a quick selfie, placing my camera on a rock by the beach. I would love to take both John and Mr A to the more remote parts of Scotland one day.

  1. When I first read the name of the isle I thought of Scandinavia or the Netherlands. Doesn't sound particularly Scottish! But it seems to be a beautiful isle! Love your pictures! I've only been to the Highlands and Edinburgh but the Scottish islands are on top of my bucket list!

  2. Wow, your photos are stunning! My boyfriend and I were in Scotland in January but unfortunately we only had a week to travel around and didn't make it outside of Edinburgh and Glasgow very much. The highlands have been haunting me since and every picture of a hairy coo makes me want to return immediately. :)

Thats so lovely to hear you have been to Scotland though - I love Edinburgh - one of my favourite cities in the world. You really should go back and explore the highlands :)

  3. I am dying to see the more rural areas of Scotland! We ventured briefly into the Highlands, although most of our time was in Edinburgh, and I fell in love with the country.

  4. Eigg looks incredibly beautiful and untouched by commercialism. I love places like that, what you see is what you get and the scenery, what a way to start every day!

    Great post!
