Weekenders - Cardiff Castle

It was so wonderful to finally have a sunny and dry bank holiday and we made sure to make the most of it. We headed out early in the morning to have brunch at one of our favourite spots - 29 Park Place. I opted for the avocado and chilli toast while the boys had blueberry pancakes and enjoyed playing some pool and sitting on the beanbags outside. There is a wonderful chilled vibe about the place and they welcome families and no rush to leave straight away so it was great to have a nice slow start to the day.

Having finally picked up our Castle Key which we should of done years ago and if you either live or work in Cardiff I completely recommend you do as it's £5 for 3yrs and you can visit the castle grounds and apartments as much as you and it's so nice to know we can pop in anytime. We initially thought it would be pack on a bank holiday but actually it was surprisingly calm and we knew we had made the right choice as there is a lot of things to explore and space to run and you and like us you can spend hours here. First stop was "Firing Line" - The museum of the Welsh solider and is located on the lower grounds of the main building, after that we headed up to the top of the castle wall for a walk around the grounds and down onto the grass for the kids to play. I also finally managed to have a look inside the beautiful Castle apartments and I highly recommend you do check them out as the walls and incredibly decorated with the finest details.

Norman Keep

John also took our eldest up the Norman keep which may not look that high but it's 50 steps just to the base of it and then further steps up to the top but the view is well worth it as you can see right across the city. They resident falconer was also their with an array of hunting birds and owls which was popular with the kids as well as the large trebuchet in the grounds and the wartime shelters inside the castle walls. We did spent most of our time however just enjoying the sun and running on the grass and indulging in a few treats from the cafe.

White Owl

I always feel so luckily to live in the city where right in the centre is a beautiful and historical castle, it certainly adds a little bit of magic and wonder to the place and even when we don't go into the grounds it boarders onto our favourite park - Bute Park and the walls are adored with different animal sculptures. I don't think its something we will ever get bored with.

To end a long day and a wonderful long weekend we went for a little stroll though the city before tucking into some delicious Burritos which have become my eldest new favourite thing - he is a notoriously fussy eater so seeing him devour a wrap filled with veggies and rice is a delight and a real treat.

  1. It looks beautiful and a bargain too, you are making me hope Ally gets his A level grades and goes to the Uni there, I'm rather fancying weekends away to Cardiff. I'm surprised how quiet it was for a bank holiday weekend, all the better for you and the safe space it provides to run free.

  7. What a bargain! That's definitely worth it, even if you just visit for a quick look round on wet days, you have another great option for kids exploring. The castle looks very majestic, lovely to live so close to it. Thanks for linking up with #Whatevertheweather x
