Before heading off to Amsterdam last month with Stena Lines (blog post coming soon) we first spent three days in London, one of our favourite UK cities as it's just packed with family friendly places to explore and I thought we would share three of our favourite free places that combine both indoor and outdoor fun and learning right in the heart of the city.

1. Wildlife Garden Natural History Museum

Everyone knows about the Dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum but our other favourite spot there is the small but perfectly formed wildlife garden with a thriving bee colony in the bee tree, wildflower meadow, damselflies flying overhead and provides a tranquil oasis within zone one as well as opportunities to learn more about this countries beautiful wildlife.

Imperial War Museum

First of all I want to say, after growing up in South Africa I am very much against war or violence in any form but my son is obsessed with vintage airplanes, army tanks and work vehicles at the moment and this museum is packed with them as well as also providing an interesting insight into how peopled lived during the various wars, the strong women who held the country together and family life. The museum is also located in the Geraldine Mary Harmsworth park which we spent just as much time running around in as we did the museum and has a lovely lavender walkway.

Princess Diana Memorial Fountain

The Princess Diana Memorial fountain is a must on a hot day with children as the fountain also doubles up as a sort of splash park with kids running up and down splashing in the water, which was very refreshing as we were there during the heatwave. With wonderful views over the Serpentine, beautiful picnic areas and of course the rest of Hyde Park to explore its a great spot to be during the summer and we spent pretty much a whole day here enjoying the outdoors and spending hardly any money which was a huge bonus.

  2. This is so timely! I'm taking Ebony to London for two weeks. I had no idea there was a meadow at the natural history museum, although I've been advised to avoid there like the plague because it's the summer holidays. We'll definitely be calling in to the memorial park though! x

  3. All favourite haunts of ours too whether inside them or out. Beautiful pictures as always Laura and if I hadn't read the text I would never have guessed you were in London. Thank you for joining me for Country Kids.

  4. These places look great, and anywhere that is free is a huge bonus! I didn't realise about the outdoor part at the National History Museum either, we were there last Sept, in fact I kind of remember seeing the door to it now but we didn't make it out there for some reason x

  5. I love the garden in the Natural History Museum - it's just a lovely place to wander and so quiet in comparison to the rest of the museum. Love your photos as always and thanks for linking up with #MondayEscapes x
