Lion & Pheasant Townhouse Hotel Review - Shrewsbury

Lion and Pheasant

If your a regular reader of my blog you may already know we recently spent a weekend in the beautiful medieval English town of Shrewsbury and stayed at the wonderful boutique style hotel Lion & Pheasant located on the Wyle Cop right next to the English bridge in a 16th building full with original features combined with a tasteful modern refresh. The location couldn't of been better as we could walk to all the main sites as well as being only moments away from the River Severn and is perfect for a weekend break. I wanted to share more about this place as it's personally somewhere we would recommend.

In the main building they have selection of single and double rooms, some with roll top baths and all with breakfast. Just outside is a converted stable block which has been turned into a two bedroom self catering accommodation and was to be our home and is perfect for a family or group looking for a little sanctuary right in the heart of the town. The two large bedrooms are both en-suite, one with a double bed and the other with two spacious single beds. Upstairs is a large open planned living and dining space which flows nicely into the kitchen, this space has been done really with natural light flooding in from the skylight and large windows. I love the simple but chic minimalist interior with a touch of Scandinavian influence.

The stable block has everything you need to be comfortable for a few days from a washing machine to a fully equipped kitchen and large dining table. We didn't actually make use of the self catering except to make a quick cup of coffee as we dinned at The Armoury in the evening and then the next day enjoyed a delicious breakfast in the main part of the hotel.

The breakfast room is full of original features with large timber exposed beams and has a wonderful cosy feeling making is a unique way to start the day. There is a light continental selection or you can pick from the simple but well put together cooked menu, I went for the eggs Florentine which was perfection with the Cafeteria while the boys had porridge and pastries with some fresh orange juice.

Downstairs in the main building is also the bar and restaurant which is full of cosy nooks, large wooden tables and places to socialise in the stylish surroundings. As we visited during the end of winter it was still pretty chilly but there is a lovely garden courtyard which in the warmer months is the perfect place for a cocktail and some al-fresco eating.

We really enjoyed our stay at The Lion and Pheasant and I would recommend it both to families and we felt very welcome and the staff were both friendly and efficient. Saying that this place is also the perfect spot for a couple child-free break as Shrewsbury is such a historically rich town with plenty of quaint pubs and independent boutiques it's great for weekend away both with the kids and without.

  5. Looks so lovely Laura! Sounds like a great family adventure. I love how it is so contemporary but still light and airy too. Often modern decor can be so dark!
