Standing up for yourself is one of those things that’s a lot easier to talk about than it is to do. Most of us would rather avoid an argument if we can. It’s easier to keep the peace, nod along, and tell yourself it’s not worth the hassle. The trouble is that sometimes it is worth the hassle. Sometimes staying quiet just means putting up with something that is making you miserable. Whether it’s at work, at home, or somewhere in between, there are times when speaking up is the only thing that makes sense.
Personally, I avoid confrontation as much as possible, and that carries over into advocating for myself, which I find difficult but often essential. Navigating adult relationships, family, and friendships can be just as much of a rollercoaster, regardless of your age and while these relationships can be empowering and positive, there are also times where you could find yourself being overlooked, bullied or taken advantage of.
When Someone Is Bullying You
Bullying doesn’t magically disappear when you become an adult. It just changes shape. It can happen at work, online, in social groups, and sometimes even within families. Unfortunately, some people never really grow out of trying to make other people feel small. The temptation is often to ignore it and hope it goes away. Sometimes that works, but a lot of the time it doesn’t. If someone keeps pushing boundaries, making nasty comments, or trying to make your life difficult, there comes a point where you need to address it. It might not be pleasant, but neither is spending months putting up with behaviour that shouldn’t be happening in the first place.
If You’re Being Treated Differently
Nobody likes to think they’re being discriminated against, but it happens more often than people realise. It can be because of your race, religion, gender, sexuality, disability, or any number of other things that make you who you are. Some people even face unfair treatment because they’re transitioning or looking into support with your HRT FTM treatment. The difficult part is that discrimination isn’t always obvious. Sometimes it’s subtle comments. Sometimes it’s opportunities that mysteriously seem to pass you by. Other times it’s right there in front of your face. If something feels off, don’t ignore it just because you’re worried about rocking the boat. Keep records, save emails if you need to, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Nobody should have to put up with being treated unfairly.

When Somebody Else Has Caused You Harm
Accidents happen. That’s just life. But there is a difference between an accident and someone else’s carelessness, leaving you to pick up the pieces. If you’ve been injured because somebody didn’t do what they were supposed to do, then you shouldn’t be the one left dealing with the consequences on your own. A lot of people avoid pursuing anything because they don’t want to cause problems, but standing up for yourself isn’t about causing problems. It’s about making sure you’re not left out of pocket or struggling because of somebody else’s mistake. If you need legal advice or support, there’s nothing wrong with getting it.
When Friends And Family Won’t Let Things Go
The people closest to us can sometimes be the hardest people to deal with. They usually mean well, which somehow makes it even more frustrating. You know they care, but that doesn’t make constant nagging, unwanted advice, or endless opinions any easier to listen to. At some point, you have to be honest. If somebody’s behaviour is getting on your nerves or making you unhappy, tell them. You don’t have to start an argument, but you also don’t have to sit there smiling while silently wishing they’d stop. Healthy relationships need boundaries, even when it’s uncomfortable.
