Easy Wins to Reduce Moving Stress Before the Big Day

moving home

Moving a house can go one of two ways: it can run as smoothly as water through a river, or it can implode and turn the entire process on its head. And while everyone hopes for and plans for the first scenario. Many times, the second one is a reality.

And when you’re in the midst of moving, even the smallest upset can feel like a major hurdle to overcome. And often it's not the stress itself but the small details that went overlooked or weren't fully closed that turn a well-oiled move into chaos in the blink of an eye. So let's take a look at some easy wins you can have to remove moving day stress before the day itself.

Confirm Details With Your Moving Company

Expert movers like Helvetia Transporte rely on clear communication. Ifyou are unsure of any detail, or you feel there might be changes afoot, then talking to your moving company ahead of time can help you put your mind at ease.

Talk to them a few days before to confirm arrival windows, estimated duration and arrangements, ask them about what happens if things change on the day or update them on anything new that changed since confirming your booking.

Clarify payment methods and times for final payments, ask if or how you would incur additional feels and when you need to be finished by, or when the movers leave. The more information they have, the easier it will be to help your big day run smoothly and remove any unwanted stress from the process.

Finish Packing Early

Easier said than done sometimes, especially for last-minute moves, but have everything packed early with only essentials out. The aim is to be ready to move 24 hours before you actually move. This means boxed, sealed, and ready to leave, not half-packed with a vague idea of where the parcel tape is. Leave out anything you genuinely need, i.e., basic toiletries, chargers, a kettle, clothing, and leaning supplies, i.e., wipes. The more you have ready to move, the less packing you need to do and the easier the day will be.

Notify Companies of Change of Address

Now, you should always photograph your meters for accurate readings and submit these the day you move out or when you get your keys for a reduced chance of inaccurate final bills or paying someone else's motor debt.

But here, we are focusing on changing your address ahead of time. You can set up a redirect with Royal Mail in the meantime to catch any post during the moving period. But contact the DVLA to change your address, notify banks, insurance companies, subscription (food delivery services, especially if a takeaway is on the cards for moving day) and any other companies that need your address, as well as your doctor, dentist, optician, etc. Making a list and doing it ahead of time removes the chance of things being missing during the move.

Prepare a First Night Box

First nights in new homes rarely go as planned, and things won't always end up how you think they might.

Have one box clearly labelled and filled with clean bedding, pyjamas, toiletries, chargers and basic kitchen essentials. If you have children or pets, include toys or favourite items and food in here too to help ease the move. And keep this box separate. Don't forget your toothbrush and toothpaste.

If you really want to be proud of yourself in the future, put some money or a gift card in to do a shop or food delivery for your first night or arrange a supermarket delivery to arrive that evening or the next morning, so you have food in.

Clean Pathways

Clearing pathways is removing anything that can be a trip hazard where you need to walk to move furniture, boxes or anything that can hinder the removal company from doing their job.

Think about securing doors open to rooms or hallways, removing rugs or securing them to the floor, keeping shoes and coats out of high-traffic areas, and not stacking boxes at either end where someone might fall over them.

You might find you want to lay down dust covers or floor protection to protect against damage, or temporarily remove obstacles. Check internally and externally, especially if you need access via the back of a property, not just the front door, if access is better, and you have wider doors at the rear than the front. So think driveways, alleys, gates and garden furniture, etc.
