5 reasons to give rock climbing & bouldering a go

bouldering

If you know me you know I always love to gain new skills and try new things and while I have dipped in and out of rock climbing during my youth, a few years ago I decided to do a formal climbing course to equip me with the know-how when it comes to belaying, rope tying and increasing my knowledge of basic equipment. Around that time, I started to do more bouldering, something which I really enjoy.

So why give rock climbing or bouldering a go?

1. It's suitable for all ages

Both my kids and I enjoy going bouldering, and our local climbing centre does taster days for anyone between 3-99yrs old - it really is for everyone, regardless of gender, age, size or fitness level. I love that multiple family members can take part, and if it's something you have always fancied giving a go, there's no time like the present.

2. It's a great all-body workout

While I enjoy rock climbing and bouldering for the fun and challenging aspect, it's an added bonus that it can really help your overall fitness, especially if you do it regularly. Unlike other sports, climbing uses nearly all your muscles, but its a lot more fun than the gym in my opinion.

3. Adventure travel and climbing go hand in hand

Adventure travel is exciting and offers the chance to try new things, improve skills and even travel with other seasoned climbers, enjoying everything from rock climbing, via ferrata, to canyoning and kayaking. One of my dreams would be to do a small climb in Yosemite National Park, the home of El Capitan.

4. You can work within your budget

While climbing can be expensive depending on how seriously you take it, you can get started in an affordable way. Taster sessions at local climbing centres are usually very reasonable and you can pick up a starter pair of climbing shoes for £35 (which can be used for both rope climbing and bouldering) and a climbing centre membership is usually in line with a gym membership. Once you progress, you can then start investing in your own equipment with one of the most important pieces being a climbing harness. Using certified climbing harnesses from well-known brands ensures quality and safety. When buying, look for authentic labels and certification marks.

5. Climbing has a supportive community

The one thing about climbing and bouldering is that it's a very social sport and has a real sense of community. Lots of centres run different nights such as women's night and lgbtq+ friendly nights, and it gives a lot of opportunity to create new friends.

As with most sports, there is a risk element to rock climbing and bouldering, although as long as you take time to learn the proper techniques, ensure to warm up and utilise proper climbing centres, that will help to keep you safe. Of course, it goes without saying that if you do invest in your own equipment, to should periodically inspect all straps, stitching, and attachment points for signs of wear. Replacing a worn harness is safer than risking failure on a climb. Proper maintenance ensures your harness remains reliable for multiple adventures and provides peace of mind during every trip.

But the main thing is to have fun!
