Decluttering to help fund your travels

decluttering

Decluttering can be a great way to clear your home and free your mind from the low-level stress that comes from living amidst mountains of junk. At the same time, it can be a profitable exercise and can be used towards your travel fund, something I often do. If you think that some of your possessions might hold value, then it might be time to unlock some of that value.

The best time to do this is often just before you move home, or before you go travelling. This way, you’ll make it easier to pack. Plus, if you’re going to be sorting through your belongings anyway, giving yourself a chance to get rid of the things you no longer need can be highly liberating – and it can make your travel budget go further.

Identify What You No Longer Need

An audit of your stuff should ideally proceed on a room-by-room basis. That way, you’ll be able to easily distinguish between places you’ve decluttered and places you haven’t decluttered. This can not only make things easier in practice; it can also help you to feel like you’re making progress.

Jewellery boxes, wardrobes, computer equipment, and bookshelves might all be targeted. It might be that there are high-value items hiding that you know you aren’t going to use while you’re away, but which can be retrieved when you return home.

Understand the Different Ways to Release Value

So, what are the best ways to release value from your possessions? The most straightforward option for many is to sell them online. The smaller items can be sold and shipped via mail, while larger ones might be made available for collection.

For smaller iteams platforms such as Vinted and Ebay have personally been really good for me and for thse who don't mind people coming to their homes, Facebook marketplace can be a good option as well.

If you live in a major city, it might be that your best option is to look for a specialist dealer who will be able to buy your item quickly. Pawnshops in London might be able to provide you with a rapid injection of cash, while taking the stress out of the decluttering process. Often, you can walk in with your item and receive your money on the same day. In most cases, the broker won’t buy your item, but use it as collateral for a loan. Make sure that you know how it works before you enter into any agreement.

Make Sure Valuable Items Are Properly Assessed

Of course, when you’re getting rid of high-value items in a hurry, there’s always the danger that you’ll sell for much less than the item is really worth. The more valuable the item, the greater the potential consequences of this kind of mismatch.

Getting a professional valuation can often be worthwhile, especially if you don’t know how the value of an item might be affected by its condition. Fail to do this, and you’ll be assuming a degree of avoidable risk.

Use the Extra Funds to Travel More Confidently

When you successfully release value from those possessions you no longer use, you might put that value toward improving the quality of your travel experience. You might give yourself more spending money, or look for upgrades on your flights, or hotel, or dining arrangements. Note, however, that a good holiday budget will help you to get the most from the money you raise.
