Walston Castle family restaurant review

03/10/2015

We were recently invited to review the newly refurbished Walston Castle Beefeater in Wenvoe, a nice little spot in the Vale of Glamorgan. Having never been to a Beefeater before we were unsure of what to expect and wether they would have something to meet everyones needs and tastes, but as always we approached this open minded.

First of all there is plenty of parking which is useful especially if you have young children with you. The staff were friendly and took us to our seat straight away. The interior is simple and well designed, I love the large hanging lamps and wooden panelling everywhere. It was a little dim inside making it a bit difficult to take decent photos but that had nothing to do with the atmosphere which was nice and cosy and perfect for relaxing family time.

The fun Mr Men inspired kids menu is also packed with activities which Mr A enjoyed doing while we waited for our food to arrive. I was pleasantly surprised with the healthy options including the Feel Good kids smoothies, which is not something Mr A would have everyday but was a nice treat to go with his starter of veggie sticks and chive dip before tucking into some tomato pasta.

John had a steak for his main, as being at a Beefeater he thought he would give it a go and couldn't fault it. It came with a little side salad, portobello mushroom and chunky chips and the service was prompt. The only down fall I have to say is the lack of vegetarian options which is rather limited to three options of either a Quorn burger, Risotto (which was lovely) or Enchiladas although you could mix and match some sides with a starter for a lighter option.

Although I knew what was really on everyones mind, well especially John and Mr A's, was the array of indulgent ice-cream sundaes and I let the boys decided on which one we would share, as they are so big they make the perfect end of meal treat for a family. They opted for a Rocky Road in all it's chocolaty creamy glory.

Overall it was good value for a family night out and young children and babies are more than welcome and it offers a place to relax for parents with a glass of wine while the kids do a spot of colouring in. The food is fairly simple and unfussy and a hit with kids and they also offer a loyalty card plus daytime and afternoon value menus.

Our meal was complimentary in exchange for an honest review

  4. The Rocky Road ice- cream sundae looks divine what a treat. As a vegetarian I know all too well the struggle of choosing a dish at Beefeaters as the options are limited.
