Quaint houses & summer sun in Lacock

10/08/2015

Last weekend my Godmother from South Africa was over in the UK, she was staying with a family friend down in the South of England so myself, John and the two boys as well as my mother decided to find somewhere we call all meet halfway and enjoy exploring somewhere new that we hadn't been to before. Through our search we came across the National Trust village of Lacock in Wiltshire, just outside Chippenham and only 1.5 hour drive from us.

The village is home to Lacock Abbey and has also been used many times as a filming location such as Cranford, Harry Potter and Downton Abbey to name a few, due to it's unspoiled appearance. The place could not be more picture perfect with quirky little houses lining the high street.

As with all road trips, especially when we have two children in tow, we always make sure to do a little once over of the car, we check the oil and water as well as the condition of our tyres in case we need to make any last minute tyre replacements.

When we arrived we decided to have a spot of lunch at The Stables tea rooms and had the most amazing Stilton ploughman platter. We then walked down to the playing field so Mr A could have a run around in the beautifully kept playground for an hour or so before exploring the village more. We visited the local post office and store, past the quaint junior school and beautiful archway bus stop, as well as some fantastic independent stores, artisan chocolatier and antique shop before heading to The George for an early supper in the garden.

It was one of those warm summer evenings, very relaxed and the garden had a large space for Mr A to explore as well as some climbing frames. He came across a broken birds egg that had fallen from a nest, as well as some caterpillars. Baby G also enjoyed rolling around on the grass while we soaked in the warmer weather as all it seems to have done in Wales is rain of late.

When it came to food I had a fresh pesto & roasted veg with gnocchi which was perfection, while Mr A how would not stay still long enough to sit down just had some chunky chips. The interior of the pub is also amazing and we would love to come back during winter and sit next to the big log fire.

On the way back we took a slow stroll around one of the narrower streets, coming across the bakery, pottery and another beautiful Pub which has B&B rooms which we are keeping in mind should we come this way again. It must be pretty special to live somewhere like this but as it also attracts so many visitors I also imagine it's a bit like living in a fishbowl, but believe me I would not turn down one of these stunning original houses if I had the chance.

  11. Lacock looks like a fab place to meet up with friends and spend the day exploring, it really does seem picturesque. The whole village seems to be packed to the brim with history, I bet it felt like you'd really stepped back in time for the day. It's great to see that Mr A Had a fab time on the play equipment they had there too whilst Baby G enjoyed the sunshine. Thanks for linking up with me on Country Kids.

  12. You were five minutes away from me! We pop into Lacock loads for a wander around the Abbey, village and surrounding countryside. It is a beautiful place but I couldn't love there. A friend lives in one the lovely old houses just over the bridge so if off the tourist path but a work colleague rents right in the middle - she likes it though. I'd go mad with all the eyes gazing through my windows! Beautiful pics and The George is a lovely pub :)
