Dressing up your floor

09/07/2015

Floors make up a lot of your home and yet we often overlook it, just like hanging photos on our walls we can also use the floor to bring in added pops of colour and pattern and transforming a drap room to a chic and on trend space you want to spend time in. Best of all dressing up your floor really doesn't have to cost a lot, even a bathroom rug and change the whole feel of the room or you can go for bigger and bolder ones in the living spaces.

As with everything you need to have an idea of what look you are trying to achieve as there are so many options from modern to traditional there is a style of any kind of property. You also need to take into account the size of your room and a general rule of thumb is that your rug should be no bigger than two feet shorter than your smallest wall and how you want your rug to be arranged within the furniture of the room.

I love these natural style rugs (image)

The great thing about rugs is they are not fixed like carpet which means you can take a few more risks if you want because at the end of the day you can always just roll it back up and store it away. There is also a huge variety of choice especially at stores such as Rug Mountain  and don't forget a hall runner, these can be great in a hallway when you are welcoming people into your home, having something eye catching and soft under foot will make a great first impression.

The three main things to consider when picking a rug is

1. Go with your heart - if it makes you happy enough though the colour or pattern may clash then do what feels right, like I said you can always roll it up or move it into a different room.

2. Make sure you have your measurements correct before choosing a rug

3. Learn how to take care of it to keep it in the best condition for as long as possible.

So bring some colour into your life and onto your floor and just have fun with it, at the end of the day the home is a place to live and enjoy. Geometric prints, stripes and natural fibres are all very popular at the moment and don't worry to much if these clash a little as long as you keep clutter down than it should be able to stand on it's own as a statement piece.
