The Time of Your Life in Lanzarote

I feel the need to get away from it all, somewhere warm and beautiful (image)

I don't know about you but I am really craving some sun after this seemingly long winter and not just sun but warmth, the kind that brings on relaxed evenings spent in shorts and a t-shirt nearby a beautiful sandy beach. I have been to the Canary Islands before and they did not disappoint and despite some destinations being known for a more party aspect it's still easy to get away from it all and indulge in the local food and culture and this time I have my eye on somewhere like Lanzarote and here is why.

Lanzarote is known for its year round sunshine. In the summer it boasts up to 14 hours of sunshine every day. This kind of glorious sunshine makes Lanzarote a perfect location for both sun worshippers and those who just can’t bear to stay indoors on a nice day.

Firstly to really discover and explore all the amazing things the island has to see and do then I highly recommend to hire a car to explore Lanzarote as that way you can really get off the beaten track and discover what makes this place so special.

Guinate Tropical Park

Guinate Tropical Park

Guinate Park, at the foot of Mount Corona, is home to an array of birds, reptiles and fish and is a lovely place to spend a day with the kids. Children can spend time with the penguins, meerkats and the majestic toucan in a vibrant, tropical setting. The park has several restaurants, but if you’re on a particularly tight budget, there are plenty of tranquil, free, open spaces to have a picnic if the weather is nice (which it most likely will be!).

Eating out

The Purple Turtle in Puerto del Carmen serves up fine family friendly feasts whether it's lunch you're after, breakfast to start your day, or your evening meal. It has an affordable kids menu that can help the expenses from mounting up so heavily, especially if you’re facing paying for the whole family to eat out every day for a week or two. You can kick back and relax with a cup of coffee while you overlook the beautiful Mediterranean Sea in the morning and sip a cocktail at sunset, without thinking about your troubles back home.

Submarine safaris

Sure to be a hit with older kids is one of the many submarine safaris which departs from the harbour at Puerto Calero. The trip lasts an hour and take adults and children under water to the depths of the Atlantic, where you can explore the marine life and even feed the fish. It's a nice experience for beginners, particularly if you have been thinking about scuba diving or snorkelling. The crystal blue waters are some of the most beautiful in the world and an unmissable location for first time divers.

Rancho Texas in Puerto del Carmen

Rancho Texas is an incredible animal park where kids can spend the day with various species from around the world. Don't miss the sea lion show which takes place Monday to Friday at 10:15 am and 15:30pm (15:30pm on Sundays too!), though these times may be subject to change.

There’s also a reptile park for those whole love snakes and creepy crawlies. The park has a water park too, where kids can take to the slides and enjoy some of the exhilarating rides whilst parents sip a cold, refreshing beer in the bar or take a trip on the lazy river.

Family holiday
Holidays in the sun are the best - Mr A enjoying the South of France last year

With flights from the UK running frequently and all year round, finding a holiday company that offers Lanzarote holidays should be easy, and the holiday itself shouldn't be too expensive. Be sure to do a price check before you book as prices vary significantly week on week, depending on the season. If you are travelling in the spring, be sure to bring a couple of sweaters as the temperature can drop a little during the evenings. Now all that remains is to enjoy your trip!

Thanks to First Choice for the inspiration
