We can all be the boss of our own destiny

It's feels good to be in control

I am continually grateful that through the recession both John and I have managed to become sucessfully self-employed and making it work. John was stuck in a dead-end job so he decided to go back to college, retrained and is now working as the Head Barber at a top Barbershop in Cardiff. The day I gave birth to Mr A was also the same day I was meant to start my final year back at Uni, I had to have an emergency c-section which meant I could only go back to Uni 6 weeks later but they were very supportive and I was allowed to do a lot of my work from home, allowing me to successful and exclusively breast feed my son throughout my final year and finish my course and graduate later that year. I thought I had a fairly clear business plan of what I wanted to do but being very hands on with my son meant it change direction and for the best as I now get to work from home, freelance writing, blog writing and occasionally photo-editing while looking after my son and being able to see him grow. Of course at times we could have more money and of course more time as being your own boss means working long hours (and lots of late nights) but it's all worth it.

happy family
Happy times in Brussels earlier this year

The first year was the biggest struggle as John did a 6 month unpaid position and I was also only starting out working freelance but after we both built up clients and got past that first year we have not looked back and are as busy as ever and wouldn't change a thing now and have lots of exciting plans for the next year and life has never been so interesting as it is now, things are good and we are so grateful for that.

I love that I get to spend so much time with Mr A

I truly believe we all need to be the boss of at least some part of our lives, wether it being the boss of your own business, finances, home, what you eat or how you live your life it will give you huge satisfaction and it's the kind of satisfaction you can't buy but you can create. GiffGaff have put together a great little video celebrating you doing your own thing, to inspire people to be creative and take control of their own future so do check it out

  2. Mr C and I are both self-employed and I love being my own boss, as does he. We also have the late nights and hard work with despite at the moment still not having much money but things will change! And I could never imagine going back and being employed again x

  5. That is our plan too, it is just taking a little time to get there, and sadly in the mean time we have to keep up the PT jobs! But the company is picking up little by little and we are hoping when we move I can finally open my etsy shop, which has been on hold since we left Cardiff, but I am sure we will get there eventually! Yes its hard, and money will always be tight, but I would rather be self employed than work for someone else for the rest of my life, so I'm willing to keep at it!
